  1.  Adolescent pregnancy in the Hispanic community warrants attention
  2. both because it has been underresearched and because its consequences
  3. may be particularly dramatic. In addition to economic disadvantage,
  4. Hispanic adolescents in the United States must contend with
  5. conflicting messages from two cultures regarding standards of
  6. sexuality, timing of childbearing, and appropriate roles for women.
  7. While teenagers of all ethnic groups experience some contradictions
  8. between family and peer-group attitudes toward these issues, the
  9. contrasts are often especially pronounced for Hispanic girls,
  10. especially if they or their parents have been raised abroad. This
  11. report presents an overview of social, economic, and educational
  12. conditions among Hispanic Americans and examines the following factors
  13. relating to adolescent motherhood: (1) sexual activity; (2) pregnancy
  14. and abortion; (3) childbearing; (4) birth control; and (5) causes. The
  15. report urges that culturally sensitive preventive programs be designed
  16. for Hispanic youth and suggests the following steps: (1) identify the
  17. special local needs of Hispanic youth; (2) keep young Hispanics in
  18. school and help them work toward realistic educational and
  19. occupational goals; (3) improve parent-child communication on
  20. sex-related topics; and (4) improve family planning services and
  21. outreach to Hispanic youth. Statistical data is presented in 11 tables
